Rainbow Six Siege Offline After Massive Credit Exploit

Ubisoft took the popular tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege offline in late December 2023 after a security breach allowed hackers to distribute an estimated $13.3 million worth of in-game currency to players. The Rainbow Six Siege team announced on December 27 via their X account that they had identified an incident affecting the game and were actively working on a resolution.
Exploit Grants Billions in Credits
The vulnerability exploited R6 Credits, the game’s premium currency typically purchased with real money. Players could buy 15,000 credits for $99.99, making the distributed credits equivalent to 2 billion per affected account. Hackers also granted exclusive in-game items, including unique skins, firearms, millions of Renown, and thousands of Alpha Packs. The breach extended beyond currency, with attackers manipulating chat systems and the ban ticker, and rumors claim that they also sent insulting remarks to Ubisoft leaders.
Ubisoft responded by immediately shutting down all live services, including servers and the marketplace, to contain the damage. The team confirmed no players would face bans for spending the illegitimate credits but initiated a full rollback of all transactions from the incident’s start time. The investigation revealed attackers gained complete control over the game’s online infrastructure, prompting urgent action to secure the platform.

Rollback and Partial Service Restoration
By December 29, Ubisoft completed its rollback and began reintroducing services gradually. Players connecting during the 48-hour outage window between December 27 at 10:49 UTC and December 29 may experience temporary loss of certain items, with corrections expected within two weeks. The team noted that users who did not log in during this period would see no changes to their inventories. Queue delays were anticipated as services ramped up, reflecting the complexity of restoring normal operations.
Marketplace Remains Closed Amid Ongoing Investigation
The in-game Marketplace remains shut down as Ubisoft continues its investigation into the full scope of the breach. The team emphasized that further updates will be provided as they work to secure the platform and address any lingering issues. Players are advised to monitor official channels for notifications about service restoration and item recovery processes.
