Preston-based workwear maker Alsico has nearly a century of innovation in the industry.

Charlotte Clarke, managing director of Preston-based workwear maker Alsico, shares insights into her career path, the company’s sustainability efforts, and her personal interests in a recent profile. With nearly a century of innovation in workwear, Alsico is now focused on ensuring its practices protect the planet for future generations, embedding circularity into everyday operations rather than treating it as a distant goal.

Clarke emphasizes her drive to move things forward and create a positive, achievement-oriented environment. She finds fulfillment in supporting others’ success and values honest communication and pragmatism in her leadership style. Her straightforward approach, combined with genuine care for people, supports close relationships with both colleagues and customers.

From Early Stitches to Corporate Wear

Despite not initially aiming for workwear manufacturing, Clarke’s early passion for hand-stitching and garment design laid the groundwork for her career. She recalls mastering various stitching techniques as a child and feeling immense pride in creating her first garment, an apron. Her first job at 16 with M&S in corporate wear hinted at her future path, blending her love for design with the practicalities of the industry.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

Clarke acknowledges the uncertainty from geopolitical events as a significant challenge, impacting economic stability and cost pressures. Alsico’s own manufacturing facilities provide agility, but maintaining focus on long-term goals is essential for the company. She notes that resilience goes beyond quick reactions; it requires balancing agility with a steadfast commitment to strategic vision.

Clarke identifies winning a 70 per cent share in the NHS National Uniform Framework as a landmark moment. The framework gives NHS trusts access to a more consistent and streamlined approach to uniform management, helping reduce administrative complexity, improve stock management and provide staff with garments that are comfortable, durable and designed to support a diverse workforce.

Life Outside the Office

Outside work, Clarke enjoys spending time with her family and friends, often centered around cooking and engaging conversations. She also has a passion for weightlifting, which helps her relax and stay energized. Achieving new personal bests in the gym provides a sense of accomplishment that carries over into her professional life.
