The University of Nicosia (UNIC) has earned a position in the 501–550 range of the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, placing it among the world’s leading academic institutions. This ranking assesses 2,297 universities across 118 countries, and UNIC has again demonstrated its regional dominance in research and education.

Within Cyprus, UNIC shares the top spot among universities, and when combined with Greek institutions, it ranks second overall. The university also leads Greek and Cypriot peers in research quality—a category that carries significant weight in THE’s evaluation system. The rankings consider five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

UNIC’s 153rd placement among European Union universities further confirms its status as a high-performing institution. The university’s research contributions, evaluated through citation impact, research strength, and influence, have solidified its leadership in this domain.

Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, UNIC’s rector, credited the achievement to the institution’s strong teaching and research environment. He noted that the research quality ranking, one of THE’s most important metrics, shows the combined efforts of faculty, students, and staff. This metric includes four key areas: research excellence and societal impact.

Dimitris Drikakis, Vice President for Global Partnerships, observed that the ranking confirms UNIC’s sustained focus on research. He highlighted the university’s dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships as drivers of innovation. The results, he said, belong to the entire academic community.

UNIC’s steady performance in global rankings strengthens its position as a regional research center. The institution remains focused on education, sustainability, and digital advancements, aligning its initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By maintaining excellence in both teaching and high-impact research, it plays a key role in tackling global challenges.

The university’s commitment to interdisciplinary work and international cooperation continues to expand its influence. Recent collaborations have included partnerships with institutions in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, reinforcing its global engagement. These efforts ensure UNIC remains at the forefront of addressing pressing issues in education and research.

UNIC’s ranking success also reflects its growing reputation in digital education. The institution has invested heavily in online learning platforms, attracting students from over 130 countries. This global reach enhances its ability to contribute to international academic discussions and solutions.
